familia, los amigos y los defensores de Mumia Abu-Jamal:
A la comunidad internacional:

Nosotros, los abajo firmantes, miembros y simpatizantes
del Frente Zapatista de Liberación Nacional en México,
manifestamos nuestro apoyo total por la defensa del
preso político estadounidense, Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Estamos enterados de que el proceso legal en contra del
Sr. Abu-Jamal ha estado plagado de injusticias e
irregularidades desde su detención en 1981 por el
supuesto homicidio de un policía de la ciudad de
Filadelfia. Mumia fue juzgado, declarado culpable, y
sentenciado a muerte en 1982 por sus ideas y sus
actividades políticas como ex miembro del Partido de las
Panteras Negras, y no por el crimen por el que
formalmente fue acusado.
Estamos enterados también que la procuraduría nunca pudo
probar que Mumia había actuado ilegalmente, y que, al
final de cuentas, tuvo que recurrir a la intimidación y
hostigamiento de los testigos —algunos de los cuales ya
han manifestado su apoyo a Mumia— para que cambiaran sus
testimonios o se negaran a decir la verdad al jurado que
eventualmente condenó a Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Por lo anterior, y como miembros de una organización
dedicada a la justicia social, y motivada por nuestras
conciencias y un compromiso a la solidaridad
internacional —sabiendo que una injusticia cometida
contra uno es una injusticia cometida contra todos—
sumamos nuestras voces a los que reclaman un juicio
nuevo y justo para Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Además, aprovechamos la oportunidad para manifestar
nuestra profunda oposición al uso de la pena de muerte
por cualquier Estado bajo cualquier circunstancia —sea
por medio de la ley, como en los Estados Unidos de
América, o por medio de asesinato extrajudicial, como
aquí en México. Quitar la vida de un ser humano como
castigo por haber quitado la vida de otro es éticamente
contradictorio, equivocado y malo. La muerte como
herramienta del Estado no es una forma de castigo
correccional; es una forma de asesinato criminal.

To the international community:

We, the undersigned members and supporters of the
Zapatista Front of National Liberation in Mexico,
hereby manifest our full support for the defense of
the U.S. political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.
We are aware that the legal proceedings against Mr.
Abu-Jamal have been wrought with injustices and
serious irregularities since his arrest for supposed
involvement in the death of Philadelphia police
officer Daniel Faulkner on Dec. 9th, 1981. Mumia was
tried, convicted, and sentenced to death in 1982 for
his ideas and his political involvement as a former
member of the Black Panther Party--not for the crime
he was formally accused of committing.
We are further aware that the prosecution never
proved that Mr. Abu-Jamal had acted unlawfully, and
in the end resorted to the intimidation of
witnesses--some of whom have now come forward in
Mumia's defense--in order to make them change their
testimony in court, or to refrain from telling the
truth to the jury which convicted Mr. Abu-Jamal.
Thus, as members of an organization dedicated to
social justice, and motivated by our consciences and
our commitment to international solidarity--with the
knowledge that an injustice to one is an injustice
to all--we add our voices to those demanding a new
and fair trial for Mumia Abu-Jamal.
We also take this opportunity to manifest our
deepest opposition to the use of capital punishment
by any state under any circumstances--whether by
law, as is the case in the United States of America,
or by extra-judicial assassination, as is the case
here in Mexico. Depriving a human being of life in
punishment or retribution for having taken the life
of another, is ethically contradictory and it is
wrong. State-sponsored assassination is not a form
of correctional punishment, nor is it a method of
imparting justice; it is a form of murder.
